Travel eSIM or international roaming? Compare the actual plans

The short version

Use home-carrier roaming when its included destinations and limits already fit your trip and you value keeping one line in control. Consider a travel eSIM when your unlocked compatible phone can use it and the exact price, data, validity and speed terms suit you better. Do not decide from the discount percentage or an “unlimited” label.

Choose from the trip you are taking

Answer these in order. A familiar line is not automatically the better plan, and a separate eSIM is not automatically the cheaper one.

Choose home roaming when
  • Your current plan explicitly includes the destination and needed allowance.
  • You want one carrier to handle your number and data.
  • The confirmed total and limits suit the trip.
Consider a travel eSIM when
  • Your phone is compatible, unlocked, and accepted by the provider.
  • You want a separate data allowance with stated validity.
  • The confirmed plan terms fit better than the home-carrier option.
Compare final prices, not coupon percentages. A larger discount on a higher-priced plan can still cost more.

International roaming can use a physical SIM or an eSIM. Apple states that roaming with an existing eSIM works the same way as roaming with a physical SIM.

Keep the home number and move data to the travel line

A supported dual-SIM phone can assign data separately from calls and texts. Confirm the home line's roaming charges before leaving it active.

Open Settings › Cellular › Cellular DataSelect the travel eSIM for mobile data.
Review Allow Cellular Data SwitchingTurn it off if you do not want data to move to another line. Apple notes that line behavior during calls can change.
Review each lineOpen the home and travel lines separately to check Turn On This Line and Data Roaming.

Roaming and travel-eSIM questions

Is a travel eSIM always cheaper than international roaming?
No. Compare the complete home-carrier roaming terms with the travel plan price, validity, data amount, taxes, speed policy, and any required top-up. The answer depends on the two actual plans.
Can I keep my normal number while using a travel eSIM?
A compatible dual-SIM phone can keep the home line and travel line available together. Choose which line handles data, and check whether calls or texts on the home line can trigger roaming charges.
Does a travel eSIM include calls and SMS?
Do not assume that it does. Many travel plans are sold for data, while local-carrier plans can include a phone number. Read the exact plan record before buying.
Must my phone be unlocked for a travel eSIM?
The device must be allowed to use the travel provider. On iPhone, Apple says No SIM Restrictions beside Carrier Lock means it is unlocked. Ask the original carrier about other devices.
Should data roaming be on for a travel eSIM?
Follow the travel provider instructions for that line. Some travel profiles connect through partner networks and require roaming. Keep the setting separate from the home line whenever the phone allows it.
